Connection Map Xbox360 to Windows Vista RC 1  (Wired Network)
Hello All, I will describe the Network Map here first. I have a Cable modem that is connected to a router ( wired) then the router act as a gateway and is connected to Windows Vista PC (wired) and 3 other laptops ( wireless ). This part of the networking is working fine. The problem is i have two network cards on the PC. one is connected to the Router ( i mentioned above ) the second network card is connected to Xbox360. The Connection detail says its an unindetified network. and also says limited connection :S The vista can detect there is an Xbox360 some how. and its enabled in media connect as allowed device. but The xbox360 can not find my Vista PC. In Xp there was a network Wizard. Where is it in Vista? I can not find an option to setup a network between Vista PC and Xbox360. ( wired ) <--this has nothing to do with router. I used to have same setup in XP and it worked like a charm. Should i use manual IP configurations on that Vista network card and Xbox360? But then after running the Xbox360 test , test stop at DNS "failed" after confirming the IP. Please help!!

I have changed the network maps as a workaround to atleast get connected to Xbox Live. Now my Router is acting as a Gateway from my Vista PC and Xbox360. Router firewall is disabled and UPnP service is enabled on it. MyVista PC can seethere is an Xbox360 in "my all network devices". but problem is still the same. Media Extender can not find it. I have opened all ports required on Vista PC by reading Microsofthelp pagesbut still no luck. Even turning off Vista Firewall is not helping. Is there any Known Issue for this? Xbox360 Also can see while Media network test that there isa PC but the last test PC Connection always fails on Xbox 360. Network discovery is ON and also its a Private network so Vista PC can be discovered. Where is the Wizard for all this? I do not see options in my vista that are descibedon Netowrking with Vista pages of microsoft. There is not setup a Network option in my vista RC1 :/ There was a Wizard Setup a Small Home Network Wizard in XP. Where is it in Vista?

For atleast a Live Xbox connection you can connect your Xbox360 to router directly. instead of connecting it to your LAN through your vista PC. Atleast you will have live connection. One more thing you will find intresting. Windows Media player 11 Beta has built in Media connect. You can go to Media player options and view the Shared libraries options. Allow your xbox360 there if media connect is detecting it. It might help. For me it didnt work. although the box360 is allowed in my settings. I have tried opening all Media Connect and Extender ports manually but no luck. Extander thinks my xbox360 is not on the same network as my Vista PC or the Extender key I am using is not valid or UPnP is disabled. Well key is ok , UPnP is enabled on both router and Windows Vista Firewall. And as far as same network is a concern well they are on same network, Gateway = 192.168.0.1 Vista PC = 192.168.0.101 Xbox360 = 192.168.0.102 DNS = 192.168.0.1 Vista PC can see the xbox360 in "all network devices" under unspecified group. WORKGROUP(1) MyPC Unspecified(2) gateway device and Xbox360. In network map is shows MyPC------------------------>gateway--------------------------->internet and also shows Xbox360 but can not determine which network it belongs to. Hmmm Intresting. but not good. :( My xbox360 can not find my Vista ( windows based PC )

Do you have network discovery enabled? I would try that first. Go to Control Panel / Network and Internet/ Network and Sharing Center, and set Network Discovery to On. Let me know if that works.

I've got mine turned on but still with no luck :( Do you think maybe microsoft have tried to block the Xbox 360 because of "live anywhere" and the link between vista and the xbox. But i suppose then you wouldnt be able to conenct with your router either. Nm :P Seems something to do with Microsoft end of thing and not wanting to share netwroks. Possible firewall defect?
September 25th, 2006 7:52pm

yes Network discovery is ON. I think its something really silly or might be a bug. But what???? we have a deviation. The Xbox360 can not see vista PC. its supposed to see the vista PC. Vista can find the xbox360 no problems.

Let me Descriobe everything that anyone would need to know problem Statement ============== Xbox 360 can not see Windows vista PC. 1. I see this problem when I try to connect Xbox360 to media connect or media centre extender. 2. I am trying to share the pictures , music and videos using media centre. using Vista and xbox360 3. When trying to discover the Vista PC on xbox360 it fails to see the windows based PC. 4. On windows Xp everything works fine as expected. 5. I can do file sharing betweenWindows vista& windows Xp laptop (Laptop is connected wireless to the gateway router 192.168.0.1) 6. While doing network test on Xbox360 i use option to search for windows based PC and Xbox360 does not find any. 7 .Iexpected Xbox360 to detect the windows vista PC that is connected to the same router as Windows Vista PC ( wired) 8. The Xbox live connection is working fine. Since the internet is accessed using the router that is connected to Cable model. If this is a router problem or networking problem from Xbox360 to router then Xbox live should not work either 9. There are no problems whats so ever usng Xbox live and NAT is open in the Xbox live network test of Xbox360. 10. the xbox360 is located in my gaming room and with the help of 20 meters network wire its connected to the router. 11. Picture, music and video sharing is not possible. none of the media feature work. 12.I saw this issue when I installed a Clean windows Vista. and windows xp sp2 has no problems. 13. Since the installtion of vista this media centre setup never worked. 14.Everytime i try to use xbox360 with Vista as an extenderI see this problem. 15. No matter what i tried its the same always. Xbox 360 is found on vista PC but Vista PC is not found by Xbox360 Well here is some information that people normally can ask for. Help needed please. also refer to other information I posted in my previous response.

This problem might be related to firmware of my router. I will update the firmware and will post back here after testing.

Thanks mate, Maybe microsoft will need to bring an update to the xbox 360 to allow connectivity. Highly unlikely but maybe a reason. Im currently going direct with my router very long cable needed and a hub :P Media Centre Vista works fine and no problems with xbox live. Also thinking maybe it could be something to do with drives for the LAN card? i havent tried it on any other devices yet so i cant say.

Okay ill try that later, i have some work to sort out first. Thanks very much for the information i will keep you updated.
September 26th, 2006 11:50pm

Hey GFBoyer, Yes the network profile in the vista machine is set to "Private" I thinkI should check the compatibility list of the routers with xbox360. ( ifI can find out where that list is. ) but I doubt its a router issue as XBox360 connection to router works ok as I m using Xbox live feature. Plus also Vista can detect Xbox360. Its xbox that can not connect to vista. this is really annoying. Any questions you have please do check my problem statement and other details in my previous posts.

OK are you trying to bridge. If so you need to have a crossover cable from your second nic to your xbox 360. you will then need to put in the DNS settings when your network wiz comes up for you xbox360 if you have any other issues let me know lynchmob1974@yahoo.com
September 27th, 2006 9:40pm

Well I have tried the bridging as well. cross over cable from my 2nd NIC to Xbox360. But then when Vista and Xbox360 are powered on. In network window of Vista I see the connection is private, Xbox 360 is found on vista in other network devices. but the connection also says its a limited conectivity. Both Vista 2nd NIC card and xbox on autoip assign. I tried to change it as below. Vista first NIC = automatic Ip assign from my router Vista 2nd NIC = IP = 192.168.2.1 Mask = 255.255.255.0 Gateway = None DNS = None Now on My XBox360 i run the network connection test it fails on IP check saying unable to obtain a lease from the DNS server If I manually assign an IP to Xbox360 192.168.2.100 and Gateway 192.168.2.1 then IP check passes and now it fails on DNS. What DNS should I use in this case? 192.168.2.1 ? and should I add it to and NIC TCP/IP settings? I have done this and still xbox360 fails on DNS check. There is no network wizard on vista to run as I had in windows XP. When I saw this limited conectivity problem in XP i used network wizard on XP and it resolved the issue. The first NIC connection is sharing its resources and internet in all cases. network discovery on Vista is always on no matter what setup i use. any more ideas?

I have seen many people resolved this issue where their PC was able to see Xbox360 ( no matter vista or XP SP2) and xbox360 could not see the Windows based PC ( even though XBOX live was working fine) by simply upgrading the firmware of the router. I have tired upgrading the router firmware this still does not help. So I think Xbox 360 does require some special configuration for UPnP or maybe drivers for this service in order to get this to work. But this is an assumption. Why I can not get it to work when Xbox360 connected directly to Vista PC has nothing to do with router. I have checked 2nd NIC I have. Its drviers are ok. No matter which NIC I use on my Vista PC to connect to router, Internet connection and other networking is working fine, So there is nothing wrong with any of two NIC's I have. How can I setup this small network Between Vista and Xbox360 using cross over cable? Apparently there is no network Wizard available to do this!!! Maxi Live : try to connect your Xbox360 directly to the router and also update your firmware of the router and check if that helps.
September 28th, 2006 2:22pm

I think this would help other people as well a lot http://forums.xbox.com/4850262/ShowPost.aspx Xbox360 will not connect to vista via Vista Beta Media Centre extender if its not a NA ( North american Console) I am in Europe. So thats why its not working for me. I do not know what MS is doing regarding fixing this issue. I am an MSDN subscriber and I have an Original Vista RC1 and orignial xbox360. I think they should come up with a solution really fast. :)

Hi, ive tried the firmware upgrade didnt help. Im currently running directly from my router to a hub then to my 360 and it works fine. Even media centre. Im also in Europe (England). Want work directly into my NIC.
September 28th, 2006 8:43pm

So its working on your side. Can you tell me the exact map how you got it to work? What is connected where. 1. Your Vista Pc connected to Router via network cable directly? 2. Your Xbox360 is connected to a HUB and then that hub is connected to your router? Vista PC======>router<====HUB<======xbox360 ^ || || Cable /DSL Modem or like this Vista PC=====>HUB======>Router=======>Cable/DSL Modem ^ || || Xbox360 or like this Xbox360====>HUB====>Vista PC===>Router====>Cable/DSL Modem So that means you just added HUB somwhere in your networking and thats what resolved the issue.? Is that what you did?

Nope sorry mate its: Vista PC Wireless ======== Router -------- Hub --------- Xbox 360 Its just the same as directly putting a cable in but i needed to use 2 cables because of the distance. You could maybe try doing: Router --------- Hub ------------ Vista PC | |_________ Xbox 360 But i dont really see what difference that would do. Always a thought!

Hi all, I'm Italian so I have an european version of the Xbox. I can connect my PC directly to the console (by a crossover cable). The PC (with Vista RC1) and xbox can see eachother but I can't complete the installation because Xbox360 can't connect to XboxLive. Is mandatory to be connected to the internet while I'm sharingcontents between Vista and Xbox360 ? lxRavenxl, you still have the problem ? Thanxs

I Think I figured it out! For me it was my firewall in NORTON. I went to PERSONAL FIREWALL, then CONFIGURE, NETWORKING, Then I added the xbox360 network address to my trusted Network. Its working right now just fine.vvprican is my xboxlive name!

First i think you have to install Media Connect 2.0. Once installed you then need to setup a LAN network. Run home office network wizard to setup a small network on your Windows PC. its very simply and you do not have to worry about assigning IPS. Keep all settings default for the network wizard. Make sure xbox360 is connected to you PC when you run this wizard. After this you can go to your xbox360 and find your Windows based PC. You can do that by going into the third main menu of your xbox360 and select pictures or music option. Once all this is properly setup then you can run media extender setup. I am not sure if you need a internet connection for Media Extender. but still you can have music and picture sharing without any internet connection. Also do not forget to allow xbox360 on your media connect. also share the folders using media connect. Once you install media connect and setup the LAN network Run media connect 2.0 and just simply share the folders. Its very easy to use. Cheers.
